An outstanding 1984 release on the West Coast black jazz specialist label Nimbus West by American pianist Nat Morgan, known for his work with Horace Tapscott’s Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, his time as a member of Rufus alongside Chaka Khan, and more recently as part of Carlos Niño’s Build An Ark collective. This is a powerful quintet session featuring Jesse Sharps (reeds), Danny Cortez (trumpet), Joel Ector (bass), and Fritz Wise (drums)—all closely associated with The Nimbus Collective and the Tapscott circle. While firmly rooted in hard bop, the album pushes forward with a strikingly progressive and forward-thinking approach, presenting a sound that can be heard as a foundational blueprint for what is now known as American new black jazz. Inspired, spiritual, and fiercely original from start to finish. A truly essential title. This edition comes as a Japanese domestic CD with integrated obi and liner notes. Highly recommended.
