A double album released in 1972 by none other than Nina Simone, one of the quintessential African American jazz singers, known for her wide-ranging vocal prowess—from standards to raw, primitive Afro styles. It features live recordings from her performance at the 1968 Montreux Jazz Festival. Highlights include track A2, a famous song widely known through Billie Holiday’s rendition; A3, originally featured on her 1964 album Folksy Nina; and A4, one of Simone’s signature tracks. The album is a magnificent showcase of her full charm from start to finish. The transition from C1, where she soulfully interprets songs by Alan Price and others, into the groovy call-and-response with the audience on C2, is absolutely superb. This is the original US pressing.
A2: Just in Time
C1: House of the Rising Sun
C2: See Line Woman
