One of Canada’s leading jazz pianists and a central figure in New York’s loft-jazz scene, Paul Bley had been active since the 1950s, contributing to groups such as the Ornette Coleman Quartet and the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, while also leaving behind numerous masterpieces under his own name. This album, released in 1969 on the renowned French BYG series Actuel, features recordings made in 1966 at the RCA studios in Rome, Italy, with Mark Levinson on bass and Barry Altschul on drums. The set includes the title track—a cover of an early Ornette Coleman classic—as well as compositions by Annette Peacock and Carla Bley, pieces that would go on to become staples in Bley’s repertoire and are performed here as well.
