A solo album released in 1985 on the Italian label Soul Note by Paul Bley, one of Canada’s most prominent jazz pianists, who began his career in the 1950s. A central figure in New York’s loft jazz scene, Bley is known for his work with the Ornette Coleman Quartet, the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, and for numerous masterpieces under his own leadership. While he has often interpreted scores written by Annette Peacock and Carla Bley in various arrangements, this album features only original compositions by Bley himself. From pieces that highlight his signature shadowy phrasing and use of space, to those that reflect a return to his musical roots, this is an outstanding album showcasing Bley’s remarkable playing throughout.
