Released in 1997 on King Records’ Firebird label, this album is by Percussion Museum, an ensemble led by Jun Sugawara and featuring eleven percussionists. The program includes Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Carlos Chávez’s Toccata for Percussion Instruments, and Toru Takemitsu’s Rain Tree. The particular highlight is B2, a new performance of “Rain Tree,” which Sugawara originally performed alongside Midori Takada and Yasunori Yamaguchi on Takemitsu’s 1982 masterpiece Waterscape, also featured in the guidebook OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION. Marimbas, vibraphones, and other percussion instruments evoke droplets of water falling from the branches of a tree, creating a profoundly tranquil world of sound—a truly pre-ambient soundscape. This limited-edition Super Analogue Disc was produced in the CD era with the aim of achieving the highest possible sound quality and was pressed at RTI in the United States. An exceptionally rare title.
