German trombonist Peter Herborn—active since the late ’70s as a member of Noctett and later leading his own groups through the 1980s—issued this compelling leader date in 1988. The septet features Kenny Wheeler (tp, fh), Hugo Read (as, fl), Wollie Kaiser (ts, ss, b-cl, b-fl, a-fl), Tim Wells (b), Peter Walter (keys), and Jo Thönes (ds, per). Making extensive use of synthesizers, Herborn presents a forward-looking strain of contemporary jazz that intriguingly anticipates the “new jazz” directions that would flourish in the 1990s, particularly in New York and beyond. A highly interesting and recommended set.
