Released in 1986, this album comes from the Swedish jazz quartet Rena Rama—Lennart Åberg (sax), Bobo Stenson (p), Anders Jormin (b), and Anders Kjellberg (ds)—a group that had been issuing outstanding work since the late ’70s, with each member also leaving behind classics on labels such as ECM and Caprice. Recorded at Oslo’s famed Rainbow Studio, well known as the site of countless ECM sessions, with Jan Erik Kongshaug at the controls, the album features all original compositions by the members. From B1, which blends a refined contemporary approach with subtle folkloric overtones, to the group’s uniquely polished sound throughout, this is a hidden gem of Scandinavian jazz of the highest order. Highly recommended.
