Here we have a superb 1983 release by Nigerian singer/guitarist Segun Adewale, leading his group Superstars International. Adewale, of Yoruba heritage, delivers one of the defining statements of early-’80s juju on this outstanding album. Though fellow Nigerian star King Sunny Ade also recorded a piece bearing a similar title, this work centers on the profound Yoruba concept of “Ase”—the vital force or spiritual authority through which words and prayers are believed to manifest into reality. It is a deeply rooted cultural idea, and the album channels that sense of invocation and affirmation throughout. Structured in the classic juju tradition, multiple movements unfold seamlessly across each side, creating long, continuous suites rather than isolated tracks. Anchored by the undulating pulse of the talking drum, the music follows a royal-road juju format while incorporating rich horn arrangements and interlocking guitar lines. The result is a highly danceable, groove-driven sound infused with a generous dose of funk. A vibrant and powerful statement from Adewale at his peak—essential listening for collectors of heavyweight African dance music.

There is a section on B1 where a distorted noise, likely caused by peak overloading, can be heard.

A5: Halleluya
