After graduating from Harvard University, American pianist Steve Kuhn studied innovative jazz at the Lenox School of Music, where he interacted with Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, and later rose to prominence performing with groups led by Kenny Dorham and John Coltrane. This 1981 album captures a live recording from a performance held that same year at Fat Tuesday’s in New York. The ensemble features a trio with Harvie Swartz (bass) and Bob Moses (drums), joined by vocalist Sheila Jordan, Kuhn’s collaborator on the acclaimed 1980 album Playground. Highlights include the upbeat samba-jazz track A2, showcasing Jordan’s brilliant scat singing, and the Latin jazz B1, composed by Swartz—both brimming with the spontaneous groove that only live performance can bring. Highly recommended. Original German pressing.
A1: Turn to Gold
A2: The Drinking Song
