American pianist Steve Weisberg, who was a member of the Boston-based band Sons of Sappho, has worked on music for films, documentaries, and off-Broadway musicals. In the 2000s, he also served as the music director for Perla Batalla’s all-star tribute concert The Gospel According to Leonard Cohen. In 1986, under the production of Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, Weisberg released his only leader album. Featuring a lineup of top-tier musicians, including Bakida Carroll (trumpet), John Clark (French horn), Wolfgang Puschnig (alto saxophone, flute), Howard Johnson (bass saxophone, bass clarinet), and Steve Swallow (bass), the album presents original compositions infused with the essence of tango and early jazz. With its unconventional sensibility and lush ensemble arrangements, the music unfolds like a cinematic narrative, evoking a storytelling quality reminiscent of Carla Bley’s big band works.
