A 1984 album by Massachusetts-born American composer and pianist Steven Schoenberg, released on his own independent label. Consisting entirely of solo acoustic piano improvisations, the music nevertheless unfolds within a clearly defined structural framework, with strongly perceptible chord progressions, recurring motifs, rhythmic patterns, and a consistent sense of tonality that sets it apart from conventional free improvisation. Classical music, jazz, blues, and Impressionistic influences reminiscent of Debussy all intersect throughout the album, yet the playing remains remarkably cohesive. Above all, it is the sheer beauty of the melodies—flowing continuously from beginning to end—that makes this such a compelling recording.
