This is the debut leader album released by American trumpeter Ted Curson in 1961 on Old Town Records, having previously been active as a member of groups led by Cecil Taylor and Charles Mingus. Recorded with a quintet featuring Bill Barron (ts), Kenny Drew (p), Jimmy Garrison (b), and Roy Haynes (ds), tracks A3 and B2 feature Eric Dolphy (ft) instead of Barron, while tracks A2/A4/B4 feature Danny Richmond (ds), and tracks A5 and B3 feature Pete La Rocca (ds). Opening with oriental phrases, the album features outstanding performances from all the participating members, blending Afro-Cuban influences with Duke Ellington's classic tune on A1, graceful interplay between Dolphy's flute and Curson's trumpet on B2, and the earthy drumming of La Rocca leaving an impression on B3. Released as a limited edition reissue from the <G&D Collection> series by Century Records in 1990, including an obi and insert.
