The fourth volume of Tibetan Buddhist music issued in 1978 as part of the prestigious Nonesuch Explorer Series of ethnographic and field recordings. Captured in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, Northwest India by David Lewiston, this document records an exorcistic ritual conducted by Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche—appointed the first head of the Nyingma lineage by the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration—an eminent figure who propagated the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism in exile. Resounding as if across mountain ranges, the ceremony unfolds through overtone-rich, subterranean low-voice chanting, the brilliant clangor of ritual metal percussion, and penetrating wind instruments. Tibetan Buddhist music has profoundly influenced avant-garde composers and improvisers—from Don Cherry to Musica Elettronica Viva and Alvin Curran—yet the source itself reveals a sonic world already radically avant-garde in its raw, ceremonial form.
