An original soundtrack album from the 1985 film adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman, the celebrated novel by Argentine writer Manuel Puig. Composed by Brazilian composer John Neschling, the record is largely built around opera- and popular-music-styled pieces layered with spoken dialogue, giving it a strong spoken-word character throughout. That said, the real talking points here are the details. While appearing mainly in a supporting role for Neschling’s compositions, the participation of Nando Carneiro—a protégé of Egberto Gismonti—is a very nice surprise, as is the inclusion of tracks by UK electronic/ambient heavyweight Wally Badarou. Badarou’s primitive electronic beat on A6 and the deep ambient cut on B1 are absolute standouts—simply superb.

A6: Novela Das Nove
B1: Pavilhao IV
