Woody Shaw, an American trumpeter who has participated in sessions with Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver Quintet, Joe Henderson Quintet, and many other groups, and has also recorded many masterpieces with his own group. This double album, released in 1971, features Ron Carter, Gary Bartz, Bennie Maupin, Lenny White, and Clint Houston. The album features a range of music from Miles Davis' electrifying influences, such as the jazz funk C1, which opens with an organic texture and then plunges into raging improvisation, to hard bop, and straight-up African blackness spirituality. D2, dedicated to Eric Dolphy, is also beautiful.
