A very hard to find record has just come in. This is the second album by Italian pianist Arturo Stàlteri, who, despite his classical background, was active as a member of the progressive rock band Pierrot Lunaire in 1979, released his own prog-leaning work Andre Sulla Luna, and also appeared on Robert Donnini’s masterpiece Tunedless 2. Although the album itself was completed in 1983, it was not issued until 1987 by the deeply obscure Italian independent label Lynx. The result is a remarkably refined work in which acoustic instrumentation and electronics are blended in exquisite balance, with an aesthetic that recalls fellow Italian composer Roberto Cacciapaglia. A2 is especially outstanding: composed from a freely interpreted Indian raga mode inspired by a journey to India, it unfolds into a singular sonic world that fuses the orientalism of Don Cherry with minimalism, creating something like a ritualistic ethno-experimental jazz piece. Astonishingly, this copy was originally imported directly into Japan by Marquee, the central force in spreading progressive rock culture in Japan at the time, and comes complete with an obi-style insert featuring Japanese liner notes.

A2: Raga Occidentale
B1: Goa Di Fronte All ‘Oceano
B2: Mulini
B4: La Pescatrice Di Perle
B5: Nel Palazzo Dei Venti
