The original soundtrack album for the film adaptation of The Starting Point of My Twenties, based on the diary left behind by university student Etsuko Takano, who took her own life in 1969 amid the turmoil of the student protest movement. The music was handled by Japanese rock band Yonin Bayashi, for whom this was effectively their debut work. At the time, the lineup consisted of Katsutoshi Morizono (vo, g), Daiji Okai (ds), Hidemi Sakashita (key), and Shinichi Nakamura (b). Alternating with the spoken lines of actress Yuriko Sumi, who played the lead role, Yonin Bayashi’s psychedelic rock — full of atmosphere and groove — is nothing short of outstanding. In particular, A5 makes me imagine, perhaps fancifully, that it influenced Shintaro Sakamoto during his Yura Yura Teikoku days. Highly recommended.
