This is a 1983 album by Dollar Brand, also known as Abdullah Ibrahim, a South African jazz pianist/composer who has been active since the 1960s and has produced numerous masterpieces with an African theme. The album features his quartet with his close collaborators Carlos Ward (ft, as), Essiet Okun Essiet (b), and Don Mumford (ds). The album includes tracks like A1, which is based on the traditional folk music "Kramat" that Brand sang during his childhood at festivals in his hometown of Cape Town, South Africa. A3 depicts the transportation of black laborers by trains, while B1 expresses the ancient African spirit. B3 is a tribute to John Coltrane. In contrast to his previous works with social messages, this masterpiece reflects a positive energy that focuses on the soul and passion of African identity. The entire album is wonderful. If you enjoy Don Cherry's music, be sure to check this out.
