Released in 1973, this is a stunning album by Syrian-born French bassist François Rabbath, who had been active as a session musician since the early 1960s. From the ethnic ensemble pieces A1 and A?—unfolding with multiple percussionists and drummers—to the weightless, drifting atmosphere of B2, the album is filled with astonishingly deep soundscapes shaped by Rabbath’s endlessly fluid double bass lines and primitive rhythmic force. A truly mind-bending work of deep contemporary jazz, and fully deserving of being called one of his absolute masterpieces. A massive recommendation from start to finish.

A1: L'odysée D'eau
B1: Mutants D'Eau Pale
B2: Thyossane
