A 1978 album by pianist Idil Biret, known in the classical world for her recordings of composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Chopin, but who also actively recorded postwar avant-garde works during the 1970s. The album features compositions by İlhan Mimaroğlu, Niccolò Castiglioni, André Boucourechliev, and Leo Brouwer, all of them highly experimental in character. Particularly noteworthy is A1, Mimaroğlu’s “Session,” an electroacoustic work constructed from fragmentary piano passages, electronic sounds, and spoken word. B1 by Boucourechliev is equally fascinating. Under the concept of an “archipelago,” several performers move through a series of given musical “islands,” improvising the order and duration of their passages as they collectively shape the overall structure of the piece.
