A 1984 album by the Vienna Art Choir, released on the German experimental jazz label Moers Music. Under the overall direction of Swiss composer Mathias Rüegg, best known as the leader of the Vienna Art Orchestra, the ensemble features Lauren Newton at the forefront, alongside musicians including AACM-associated trombonist George Lewis, who left behind landmark recordings for Black Saint, as well as Wolfgang Puschnig and Christian Radovan. This album takes five old Swiss songs as its source material and boldly reconstructs them as avant-garde jazz and vocal music. Newton’s remarkably flexible vocal work is especially striking, treating the human voice as phoneme, noise, percussion, and instrument all at once. A superb and highly distinctive recording.
