Released in 1988, this compilation album features tracks by nine lesser-known artists active in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Although I cannot say for certain, it seems that aside from Ladston do Nascimento, most of the artists included here had not released their own albums at the time, making this a collection of largely obscure local musicians. Yet from the moment the needle drops, it immediately feels like a real discovery. A2 by Babaya is especially outstanding, with its breezy, lightly grooving boogie rhythm, crystal-clear electric sound, and a slightly husky, alluring vocal gliding beautifully over a crossover-style arrangement. B1 by Vanessa Falabella is another highlight, carrying a delicate mellowness that recalls 1980s Gal Costa or Marina. Throughout the album, you can hear saudade-filled vocal tracks with a refreshing, airy quality that feels truly emblematic of the Minas sound. Highly recommended.
A2: Babaya “Todo Mistério”
B1: Vanessa Falabella “Jasmin”
