Released on Cook Records, the label founded by recording engineer Emory Cook, this album documents the percussion music of Trinidad in the Caribbean. Originally issued in mono in 1956, this is the stereo edition released in 1958, when stereo LPs were just beginning to appear. Cook traveled to Trinidad and recorded an improvised performance at the Little Carib Theatre in the capital, Port of Spain, by a six-member percussion ensemble centered around Andrew Beddoe and “Popsy” Charles. On A1, the percussion is augmented by glasses, bottles, a rusty iron, automobile brake drums, spoons, and other objects, producing a barrage of striking sounds propelled by an intense groove. A2 is an improvisation based on a fundamental rhythm originating from the West African coast, while Side B presents six different rhythms traditionally found on the island of Carriacou. Alongside Best Drummer in Haiti, the outstanding recording of traditional Haitian percussion featured in the guidebook OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION, this is one of the essential titles in the Cook Records catalogue.

A1: Calypso in Drums
A2: Drumology
