Produced by Ed Michel, this 1981 album features Art Pepper (alto sax), John Klemmer (tenor sax), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), and Joe Henderson (tenor sax). As the title suggests, it includes four jazz ballads, each led by one of these saxophonists, performed in a quartet with Stanley Cowell (piano), Roy Haynes (drums), and either Cecil McBee (bass) or John Heard (bass). While Klemmer delivers quite a powerful performance, the rest of the album showcases very moody and high-quality ballads. Griffin's B1 and Henderson's B2 are especially exquisite.

B1: Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
B2: Good Morning, Heartache
