South African jazz pianist and composer Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim), active since the 1960s and renowned for numerous masterpieces themed around Africa, is featured on this 1983 artist compilation album. Co-produced by Brand and the Swiss label Plainisphere, the double album captures live recordings from his performance at the 1978 Nyon Jazz Festival in the Swiss town of Nyon on the shores of Lake Geneva. Highlights include iconic compositions such as “Ismael” (A3) and “Children of Africa” (D2), alongside previously unperformed pieces like B1. Brand also delivers expressive interpretations of works by Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, while a stunning flute solo on D4 rounds out this exceptional live document. A must-have for fans of deeply lyrical, spiritually resonant jazz.
