A wonderful 1989 Enja Records release from Munich by South African jazz pianist/composer Abdullah Ibrahim (aka Dollar Brand) and his group Ekaya—artists active since the 1960s and celebrated for a rich body of Africa-themed work. The stellar lineup includes Robin Eubanks (tb), John Stubblefield (fl, ts), Horace Alexander Young (ss, as, piccolo), Howard Johnson (tuba, tp, bs), Buster Williams (b), and Brian Adams (ds). From the uplifting, groove-driven A1/A2/A3 to the gently flowing B2 dedicated to the revered Duke Ellington, the album offers a consistently superb program steeped in the vivid, colorful sensibility unique to Cape Jazz. A standout title throughout.
