This is the second of three separate releases of music from a three-LP box set released in 1973 by Aki Takahashi, a pianist who has a brother, Yuji Takahashi, who is one of Japan's leading contemporary musicians, and himself an internationally acclaimed and widely active contemporary musician with performances of John Cage and Toru Takemitsu. This album features 12-tone technique and serialism by composers after the New Viennese School and beyond, such as Anton Webern, Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Iannis Xenaxis, Olivier Messiaen, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Sylvano Bussotti, John Cage, and others. The program features scores by composers from the New Viennese School, including Xenaxis, Olivier Messiaen, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Sylvano Bussotti, and John Cage. Among them, Cage and Bussotti's chance operations and Stockhausen's fusion of total serierism and chance operation are innovative.
