This album, released in 1980 by ALM Records (operated by Kojima Recording) as part of its Contemporary Music Series, features Akiko Nishigata — a classical koto performer from the Yamada school who also actively engaged in avant-garde performance. The record includes five compositions by contemporary composers Katsuhiko Tsubonō, Shin’ichirō Ikebe, Shigeaki Saegusa, and Sōmei Satō, all written at Nishigata’s request. Each track is outstanding: Side A opens with Tsubonō’s A1 and Ikebe’s A2, both brimming with dynamic contrasts and rhythmic intensity. Side B begins with Saegusa’s B1, whose collaboration with percussion evokes the energy of progressive rock. Finally, B2 — aptly titled “Silence” — is a stark, minimalist work by Satō, showcasing his distinctive avant-garde sensibility. Highly recommended.
