The debut album by Ritual-All-7-70, a group centered around multi-instrumentalist Alan Sondheim, released in 1967 on New York’s ESP-Disk, one of the key labels for avant-garde and free jazz. The lineup also includes Ruth Ann Hutchinson, Chris Mattheson, Barry Sugarman, J.P., and Robert Poholek. Featuring instruments such as tabla, xylophone, bansuri, koto, and Hawaiian guitar, the group develops a highly improvisational sound that freely absorbs and reinterprets ethnic and traditional musical elements. A remarkable early example of ethno-jazz, and a recording that strongly resonates with Don Cherry’s work from the 1960s, including the Mu series.
