An album featuring recordings from 1963 in Copenhagen, Denmark, by American saxophonist Albert Ayler, who made a name for himself as a pioneer of avant-garde jazz in 1960s New York. The quartet includes Niels Bronsted (p), Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (b), and Ronnie Gardiner (ds). The original album was released in 1964 by Denmark’s Debut Records under the title My Name is Albert Ayler, while this version was reissued in 1979 by France’s Vogue. Believed to have been recorded just before Ayler returned to the U.S. after living in Sweden, the album showcases his distinctive style, setting him apart from other musicians. Tracks like A2 and A4, where he freely and passionately interprets jazz standards, vividly illustrate his unique artistry. The contrast between Ayler’s unrestrained playing and the rhythm section’s earnest performance makes for an utterly fascinating listen.

A2: Bye Bye, Blackbirs

A4: Summertime
