An absolute monster of a debut from one of Argentina’s greatest jazz pianists, Alberto Favero, originally released in 1970 on the Trova label. Famously highlighted in the first edition of the guidebook Obscure Sound (though with his 1987 work), this stunning 1st LP already marks him as a towering figure. Featuring a powerhouse lineup including Horacio “Chivo” Borraro, Roberto Fernandez, Jorge Rodrigues, and Bernardo Baraj, along with many of Argentina’s finest players. Subtitled In Memoriam John Coltrane, the record is a heartfelt dedication to the US giant himself. The epic five-part suite stands as an homage to Coltrane’s immortal A Love Supreme, while at the same time channeling the spiritual fire you’d find in the lineage of Archie Shepp and other Coltrane-inspired US heavyweights. Side B in particular is just breathtaking—deep, spiritual, and utterly transportive. A stone-cold essential piece right alongside Chivo Borraro’s masterpiece Blues para un Cosmonauta when it comes to defining Argentine jazz. This copy is the 1977 US issue on Catalyst.
