An outstanding 1982 release by Alhaji Chief Sikiru Ayinde Barrister—one of Nigeria’s most important artists alongside King Sunny Adé—and his group, His Supreme Fuji Commanders, who from the late 1970s onward issued a vast body of work under various names. Like King Sunny Adé, the music is rooted in juju, a Nigerian genre, but here it is reimagined in a raw, outsider style that Barrister himself dubbed “Fuji Garbage,” resulting in a deeply local yet irresistibly danceable form of juju. The unusually thick layers of talking drum rhythms are paired with his uniquely ornamented vocal delivery, at once commanding and imbued with a ritualistic intensity. Containing ten tracks in total, the album follows the tradition of much Nigerian juju and fuji music, with each side flowing continuously into extended performances rather than being divided into discrete songs.
