A 1983 third album by Swiss electric harpist Andreas Vollenweider. While incorporating elements from a wide range of traditional musics, the album unfolds through a crystalline, vividly acoustic sound that evokes a deep sense of nostalgia, creating a singular musical world far removed from conventional New Age music. The sound quality is exceptional as well, particularly the beautifully judged use of echo that allows the music to resonate through a vast sense of space. There is also a distinctly continental, folk-oriented quality that seems to transform elements of traditional Chinese music, while the harp at times produces timbres and scales reminiscent of the Japanese koto—something that may make the music especially easy for Japanese listeners to connect with emotionally, particularly when the melodies take on a more distinctly Asian character. All of Vollenweider’s albums are excellent, but this may be his most refined work.
