A 1979 release bringing together an exceptional trio: drummer Andrew Cyrille, who began his career as a teenager playing with Coleman Hawkins and Ted Curson before joining the Cecil Taylor Unit in the mid-1960s and supporting Taylor’s sound for many years; vocalist Jeanne Lee, renowned for her work with Marion Brown and Gunter Hampel; and saxophonist Jimmy Lyons, Cecil Taylor’s longtime right-hand man. Highlights include “A2,” where Cyrille’s warm thumb piano (kalimba) tones intertwine beautifully with Lee’s gentle voice and Lyons’s freely flowing saxophone. Throughout the album, the trio develops richly textured free improvisations with a strong Afro-ethnic sensibility, making inventive use of a wide range of ethnic percussion instruments. An outstanding recording and highly recommended.
