Andrew Cyrille, even in his teens, participated in sessions with Coleman Hawkins and Ted Curson. In the mid-1960s, he joined the Cecil Taylor Unit and became a drummer who supported Taylor's sound for many years. This album was released in 1972 with his led group Maono. Participants include Donald Smith (piano), David S. Ware (tenor sax), Ted Daniel (trumpet), Stafford James (bass, violin), and Romulus Franceschini (synthesizer). The album features Afro-historical tunes like the A1 track, where singer Jeanne Lee's vocals, Elouise Loftin's poetry, and Alphoonse Cimber's Haitian drums are highlighted. Tracks like the groove-infused A2, where various instruments carve intricate polyrhythms, and the chaotic Third World-esque ethnic tune B3, reminiscent of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, create a wide expanse of sonic landscapes. This album is a superb masterpiece that unfolds a return-to-Africa jazz through profoundly primitive ritualistic expressions.
