1981 album by drummer Andrew Cyrille, who was already playing sessions with Coleman Hawkins and Ted Curson in his teens and went on to join the Cecil Taylor Unit in the mid-1960s, becoming a crucial force in Taylor’s sound for many years thereafter. Recorded in Milan in 1980, this set features a quartet with Ted Daniels (tp, fh), David S. Ware (ts), and Nick De Geronimo (b). Highlights include A1, a cover of a piece first introduced on Jocque and Le Scott’s 1978 album The Ornette Coleman Songbook, and the outstanding A2, a deep black Afro-jazz cut driven by a grooving rhythm section and a superb unison theme from trumpet and tenor sax. A powerful work of free jazz overflowing with Black consciousness and energy. Original Italian pressing.
