This is a double album released in 1975 that compiles unreleased recordings of American pianist Andrew Hill, who created numerous masterpieces on Blue Note from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. The A-side features recordings from a sextet session in 1970 with Bennie Maupin (ts, fl, b-cl), Pat Patrick (as, fl, bs), Charles Tolliver (tp), Ron Carter (b), and Ben Riley (ds). The B-side contains recordings from a quartet session in 1969 with Maupin, Carter, and Freddie Waits (ds). The C/D sides include recordings from a quintet session in 1965 with Joe Henderson (ts), Freddie Hubbard (tp), Richard Davis (b), and Joe Chambers (ds). All the tracks are outstanding, but particularly notable are the exotic jazz-funk interplay anchored by lively drums and minimal bass on A1, as well as the '70s flavor with distinct layers of phrases in the soul jazz A2. This session is exceptionally well-crafted. Highly recommended.
