Andrew Richardson
Rainforest
A.R.M. Digital (Australia) 1985
YPRX 2250 (LP)
sleeve : EX(WC)
media : EX-/EX-(some light noise.)
This is the third album released in 1985 on a private label by little-known Sydney-based Australian flutist Andrew Richardson. I haven’t heard his two earlier albums from 1983 and 1984, but they appear to take a different approach. On this third album, titled Rainforest, he presents contemporary music with an organic aesthetic, featuring his own gentle, graceful solo flute as the centerpiece, layered with bells performed by Adrienne Overall and tape edits by Jim Moginie and Michael Gissing. Highlights include A6, which layers sampled bird calls, and B6, where faintly drifting synth drones combine with flute—again overlaid with bird recordings. The modern sensibilities woven into its modern classical approach feel remarkably in tune with the present day.
