An obscure record has arrived. This is the sole album by Anonyma, a folk duo formed by Mary McLaughlin — a singer and scholar deeply rooted in Irish traditional song — and British singer-songwriter Anne Lister, released in 1987 on the UK label Fellside Recordings. Produced by Martin Simpson, who also contributes guitar and bass, with Laurie Harper joining on fiddle and mandolin. Highlights include B4, one of Lister’s best-known songs, later performed by Martin Simpson and Nic Jones, Tim Buckley’s cover on A4, and B3 written by Mary McLaughlin. A beautiful work where crystalline female vocals and delicate acoustic arrangements are gently woven together with the shadowy atmosphere of British folk and the mysterious resonance of Irish/Gaelic singing traditions. Also recommended are A1 and A3, both touched with a subtle new age flavor through the use of DX100 synthesizer. Never issued on CD, this album remains available only on this original LP release.

A3: Fill, Fill a run O/Cathy Loves a Priest
