A 1974 album released on Denmark’s renowned SteepleChase label by Anthony Braxton, the AACM-associated multi-reedist from Chicago who has recorded over 100 albums since the 1960s. Here he leads a quartet featuring Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums. Although the repertoire is made up entirely of jazz classics by the likes of Warne Marsh, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, and Billy Strayhorn, the results are anything but straightforward. Braxton’s singular interpretations expand each piece into something unmistakably his own, making for a truly remarkable performance throughout.
