Italian pianist and accordionist Antonello Salis—known for works such as Joining, his collaboration with Riccardo Fassi released on Splasc(h), the label that helped lead the Italian new-jazz scene of the 1980s, and Lester, his collaboration with Nana Vasconcelos—released this album in 1989 on Stile Libero, an underground Italian avant-garde label. Paolo Modugno, known among a small circle of enthusiasts for the Stile Libero classic Brise D’Automne (also featured in the guidebook obscure sound), handled the recording and mixing. The album mainly features compositions Salis wrote for painter Riccardo Caporossi’s stage production Quelli che restano, performed at the Teatro di Roma, with Caporossi also designing the artwork for this release. Salis’s accordion performance—executed with astonishing virtuosity—radiates a peculiar aesthetic in which popular music and avant-garde expression seem to intersect.
