Archie Shepp
Little Red Moon
Soul Note (Italy) 1986
SN 1112 (LP)
sleeve : EX-(CC)
media : EX+/EX+(some slightly noise.)
This 1986 release by American saxophonist Archie Shepp, one of the undisputed giants of spiritual jazz who left behind countless masterpieces that even confronted racial issues head-on, is a remarkable album issued on Italy’s renowned jazz label Soul Note. The recordings were made in a Milan studio in 1985, featuring an outstanding lineup that includes Enrico Rava (tp, fh), Siegfried Kessler (p, syn), Wilbur Little (b), and Clifford Jarvis (dr). From the strikingly raw and bluesy vocals delivered by Shepp on track A1 to his unique reinterpretation of a John Coltrane classic on B1, the album brims with soulful jazz full of groove throughout. The tracks incorporating synthesizers are particularly impressive, adding another dimension to this exceptional work.
