Archie Shepp plays Sydney Bechet
Passport to Paradise
West Wind (Germany) 1987
WEST WIND 002 (LP)
sleeve : NM-
media : EX-/EX+(some slightly noise. side A has some light noise.)
Released in 1987, this superb album finds Archie Shepp revisiting the music of Sidney Bechet, one of the earliest truly important soloists in jazz history. Backed by a quintet featuring Charles McGee (tp), Charles Eubanks (p), Santi Debriano (b), and John Betsch (ds), the album draws from sessions recorded in 1981 at Jazz Unité in La Défense, the major urban redevelopment district just outside Paris. Opening with a cover of the stage classic My Man and weaving in Shepp’s own original tribute to Bechet, the record delivers deeply expressive readings of Bechet’s timeless repertoire throughout. Every track is exceptional, but A1 and A3 — featuring guest vocals by Michelle Wiley — come especially recommended.
A1: My Man
A3: Blues for Bechet
