Archie Shepp, a gem of a saxophonist who, alongside John Coltrane and Cecil Tayler, has produced a number of back-to Africa jazz masterpieces. This is the 1982 UK reissue of an album released in 1969 on the Actuel series of BYG, France. Joined with Alan Silva, Burton Greene, Philly Joe Jones, Malachi Favors, Hank Mobley, Grachan Moncur III and Claude Delcloo. The A-side is dedicated to Malcom X, a leader of the Black Liberation Movement during the Civil Rights Movement, and is a stirring song, as if it were his life expressed in music. The B-side ends with Shepp's saxophone solo, which develops into Miles Davis' 'Oleo' after a raging interplay. This is a historical masterpiece of spiritual free jazz with a return to Africa.
