Released in 1976, this album is by the outstanding saxophonist Archie Shepp, who, alongside John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor, produced numerous masterpieces of jazz deeply rooted in African heritage. It was recorded live at the East-West Festival in Nuremberg, Germany, where Shepp performed in a trio with Cameron Brown on bass and Beaver Harris on drums. On A1, Duke Ellington’s “Solitude” is performed with a relaxed groove, and the latter half also features Shepp’s elegant piano playing. The title track on A2 races forward with a light, buoyant groove, while the nearly nineteen-minute session on B1 gives musical expression to a message from his late friend John Coltrane.
