Released in 1971, this album is by the outstanding saxophonist Archie Shepp, who, alongside John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor, created numerous masterpieces that transformed a wide range of Black musical traditions—from jazz rooted in African heritage and the avant-garde to the blues. The large ensemble features many distinguished musicians, including Charles Greenlee, Leroy Jenkins, Beaver Harris, and Grachan Moncur III, as well as singer Joe Lee Wilson. Deeply shaped by the civil rights movement that gained momentum from the late 1950s into the early 1960s, and by the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, the album carries an unmistakably powerful social and political message. It is a crucial work that leads directly into the following year’s Attica Blues. A historic masterpiece in which gospel choruses and African rhythms shake the listener to the very depths of the soul.
