Released in 1975, this album is by Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen, who has left behind numerous masterpieces for Germany’s cutting-edge jazz label ECM Records while also demonstrating his exceptional talent across many sessions. The quartet features Jon Balke on piano, Knut Riisnæs on tenor and soprano saxophones and flute, and Pål Thowsen on drums. The sequence from B2 through B4 is especially extraordinary. Beginning with an organic introduction that evokes a mist-shrouded Norwegian forest, the music passes through a moment of silence before drawing the listener deep into a spiritual realm, eventually erupting into intensely grooving improvised jazz charged with tremendous tension. The profound spirituality of this progression is simply remarkable. Original German pressing with laminated sleeve and no label code.
