This album, released in 1969 as part of the renowned <Actuel> series by the French BYG label, features the Art Ensemble of Chicago, an American group hailing from Chicago known for their fusion of African traditional music roots with free/experimental jazz. The ensemble consists of Lester Bowie, Joeph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell, and Malachi Favors. The album has always generated mixed reviews, often likened to theatrical music with a narrative quality that feels like watching a play. However, it's impossible not to appreciate the wit, satire, and powerful messages delivered by the AEOC regarding slavery and black discrimination in their unique style. How one listens to it is a matter of personal taste, but one thing is certain – it operates on a very high musical level. Track A3, which incorporates elements of funk and rock, is also outstanding. Highly recommended. This particular pressing was first released in Japan in 1971.
