Released in 1976, this double album is by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Chicago-based American group comprising Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, Joseph Jarman, and Famoudou Don Moye, whose free and experimental jazz is deeply rooted in traditional African music. The album documents a 1972 performance at Mandel Hall on the campus of the University of Chicago. With drummer and percussionist Don Moye having joined the ensemble, it captures the group’s energetic playing following their triumphant return from Paris. Dramatic shifts of pace and witty musical ideas intersect chaotically, drawing the audience into a Fourth World realm. D2 concludes with a jazz-funk-inflected beat and bears the title “Mata Kimasu,” meaning “We’ll Be Back” in Japanese. This may be connected to the fact that the album was originally issued in Japan in 1974. The Japanese pressing reportedly contained a mastering error, which was corrected on this US pressing.
