This is a masterpiece released in 1979 by Art Ensemble of Chicago, one of the leading groups of free/experimental jazz. AEOC is a group known for their primitive free jazz that makes extensive use of African folk percussion instruments, and this album is the quintessential example of their sound. The highlight is A1. The Afro-jazz is at its best, with a spiritual intro that sounds like a cloud of smoke, and then evolves into a peaceful sound that sounds like a combination of Nayabinghi and New Orleans jazz. I was surprised that AEC was doing this kind of music. The Afro-ethnic A3 with various percussions floating in the space is also spiritual.
